Description | The Senqu Bridge is a significant infrastructure project forming part of Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), a binational initiative between Lesotho and South Africa focused on water transfer and hydropower generation. The bridge replaces an existing crossing that will be submerged by the Polihali Dam and ensures continued access to Mokhotlong, Sani Pass, and surrounding areas. It spans approximately 825 meters and rises about 90 meters above the Senqu River valley, featuring a hybrid design combining girder and cable-stayed bridge elements. The project was delivered by a joint venture led by Webuild Group and regional partners, with construction starting in 2022 and completion in early 2026. The project cost is approximately R2.4 billion, with South Africa contributing around 86% of the funding. |
