Yemen is characterized by water shortages and inadequate supply infrastructure in the WASH sector (water, sanitation and hygiene). The precarious situation has a negative impact on the health situation and food security. The FC project continues to support the WASH program of the Yemeni Social Fund for Development (SFD) with another module (Phase 5). The aim of the project is to provide access to improved water sources and safe sanitation facilities. The project finances, among other things, cisterns on house roofs, water catchment basins, latrines, hygiene campaigns and local water/sewage systems (some of which are solar-powered). A large part of the measures are carried out at community level under the leadership of the SFD and in direct cooperation with representatives of the community, in particular with a cash-for-work approach, in which households receive money for implementing the measures. Larger construction projects are implemented together with local water suppliers and construction companies. The households and municipalities are selected in a multi-stage process, which is initially based on data on the needs in the governorates and on a selection of the districts by the SFD. The individual sub-projects are then selected by the SFD as part of so-called Participatory Rapid Assessments, which determine the needs at the community level and select appropriate measures. By providing poverty-oriented basic infrastructure, the SFD makes a significant contribution to improving the living conditions of poor population groups in large parts of Yemen. The target group of the project is both rural and urban households throughout Yemen.
