Oceana in Europe is exclusively focused on the ocean, and dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. We work to improve, enforce, and fully implement ocean conservation and fisheries management laws and EU Directives. All our work contributes to our larger vision of a healthy ocean playing a vital role in addressing the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and food security throughout the world. Our main pillars of work are: 1) Defending sustainable fisheries management in Europe; 2) Minimising single-use plastics reaching the ocean; 3) Eliminating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing through transparency; and 4) Building effectiveness of the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) network in Europe. Oceana's main focus is to tackle the lack of suitable implementation and enforcement of current laws and regulations, the loopholes that prevent their effective application, as well as seeking new interventions when deemed necessary. In order to achieve this, we work with the EU and its relevant policies such as the Common Fisheries Policy, the EU Habitats Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Single-Use Plastics Directive, Member States, Regional Seas Conventions, Regional Fisheries Management Organisations, the private sector and the general public. Oceana's external outreach approach combines awareness raising and public engagement together with influencing key decision makers to achieve our multiyear goals. We also partner with European NGOs and global initiatives to leverage our voice on pressing ocean issues. Furthermore, to enhance the visibility of our work, we communicate Oceana's ongoing work through media interviews, press releases, op-ed articles, audio-visuals, and engaging events. Lastly, we have access to relevant European institutions, such as, ICES, ICCAT, Advisory Councils, NEAFC, OSPAR, and GFCM amongst others.
