SGEL is the flagship entity of Shalivahana Group. The Group’s operations are primarily power generation from non-conventional energy sources like biomass, and municipal solid waste (MSW). The Group has five operating biomass plants with a capacity of 47 MW including one MSW plant. Till March 2011, the Group is expected to add 45 MW of capacity and will have a total operational portfolio of 92 MW of biomass projects, making it India’s largest biomass power company. Till FY2015, the company plans to operationalize a total portfolio of about 250+ MW capacity consisting of primarily small- medium sized biomass/waste based projects as well as wind and small hydro power projects. IFC is considering to make an equity investment in SGEL and providing project finance to SGEL’s 100% subsidiary Rake Power Ltd. for the development of 23 MW biomass power projects each in Sundergarh, Orissa and Ranchi, Jharkhand. As part of its sustainability efforts and to enhance its fuel supply chain, the Company is, in conjunction, also implementing a 3 year pilot project to explore the possibility deriving energy from municipal solid waste (MSW). An MOU has been signed with the Karimnagar municipality in Andhra Pradesh for a 3 year phased effort to study, manage, and dispose of municipal waste with an aim to convert this to energy.
