Shell Canada Sulphur Dioxide Reduction Project

Shell Canada is undertaking five projects to improve air quality by reducing sulphur dioxide emissions at its plant in Lambton. The largest project involves demolishing part of the existing cracking unit to install a new caustic scrubber tower approximately 250 feet tall, expected to cut emissions by 60%. Construction is underway with a final investment decision expected in January 2026, aiming for compliance by January 1, 2029. Other projects include introducing biofuels to reduce carbon intensity, constructing a new geodesic roof on a tank to reduce vapor emissions, mixing bio feedstocks into vehicle fuel, and installing a vapor recovery unit to reduce benzene emissions.
