Sherburne County Commuter Bus Pilot Project

Sherburne County agreed to a two-year pilot project to provide commuter bus service between the northern suburbs of Big Lake and Elk River and downtown Minneapolis, replacing the Northstar commuter rail service which will stop running in January. The bus service will operate three trips south in the morning and three trips north in the afternoon on weekdays, similar to the current train schedule. The project is a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Council, with MnDOT paying half the operating cost. The bus service aims to offer commuters another option with minimal investment from the county, funded by a local sales tax and potentially offset by bus fare revenue.
