Description | The Sherco Solar project is a large solar energy farm near Becker, Minnesota, managed by Xcel Energy. It features thousands of solar panels spread across a field of native plants and flowers. To manage vegetation and prevent plants from blocking sunlight to the panels, Xcel Energy uses hundreds to thousands of sheep to graze beneath the solar panels, an example of agrivoltaics that pairs renewable energy with agriculture for mutual benefits. The project aims to replace electricity generated by the nearby Sherco coal-fired power plant, which is being retired by 2030. Eventually, the solar farm will have 1.6 million solar panels and generate enough electricity to power about 150,000 homes. |
