Opportunity Sheridan College is a leading postsecondary institution offering over 100 diploma, certificate, and bachelor degree programs to 18,000 full-time and 35,000 continuing and part-time students. Sheridan College’s Creative Campus approach seeks to foster innovation and creative learning opportunities that prepare students for life. In order to provide more students with quality education the Hazel McCallion Campus is being expanded using a P3. Innovations The project was selected as eligible to receive up to $68 million in funding from Ontario’s second Green Bond issue in January 2016. Pioneered by the World Bank in 2008, green bonds are a tool to raise capital for projects with environmental benefits. Ontario’s Green Bond program is the first in Canada. Sheridan Creative Partnership will only receive payment from the public sector at substantial completion. This shifts significant risk for late delivery to the builder. Results The new 220,000 square-foot facility has 29 classrooms, 28 studios, labs and production spaces, meeting rooms, a centre of creative thinking, faculty and administrative offices, and a gallery space. The space can accommodate an additional 3,200 full-time students, for a total enrollment of approximately 5,500. The expansion is home to Sheridan’s Sustainable Built Environment Program, including Architecture, Interior Design, Interior Decorating and Visual Merchandizing programs of study. The facility functions as a Living Laboratory—a teaching tool that will allow students to experience and understand the positive impacts of sustainable design strategies. Consistent with Sheridan’s Mission Zero sustainability plan, which establishes aggressive targets for energy conservation and a plan towards zero waste in the future, the facility is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification including: Building materials with recycled content and a 75 per cent diversion rate for construction waste from the landfill; Reducing indoor water use by 35 per cent using highly efficient plumbing fixtures; and Design elements that respond to climate conditions including: prevailing winds, site orientation, seasonal sun and precipitation, and solar gain. “Investing in a modern, sustainable facility like this one is vital to our province’s future economic growth.
