It is a 4.1 km long twin-tube tunnel with 4 lanes, designed as an all-weather tunnel to connect Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, providing connectivity to 15 remote villages in Zanskar typically cut off during winter. The tunnel is constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under 'Project Yojak' and aims to ensure secure, year-round access to Leh via Himachal Pradesh, shortening the distance by 60 km. The project started in July 2024 and is expected to be completed by August 2028, with construction halfway complete. It holds strategic importance for rapid movement of armed forces and equipment in the region. |
