Shockoe Hill African Burial Ground Memorial Project

planned

The project involves reimagining and creating a memorial for the estimated 22,000 free and enslaved people buried at the forgotten African burial ground located beneath an interstate, a billboard, and an old gas station in Richmond. The city has tasked Baskerville architectural firm with designing the memorial, which includes three distinct design concepts such as removing the billboard to create a sound procession, embracing the current state of the site, and transforming existing structures into artwork. The project is part of the larger Shockoe Project initiative, which includes other established and proposed projects related to African American history and heritage in the Shockoe Valley area.
