SID is one of the few truly deep science incubator in the country founded by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Our focus is on incubation startups that leverage science and technology to develop innovative commercial products. We have incubated over 30 startups so far. Some of the well known startups include - Strand Life Sciences, Bellatrix Aerospace, Astrome Technology, PathShodh Healthcare, Mymo Wireless etc. We are domain agnostic and welcome founders from outside IISc too. Given that most of startups build physical products [mix of hardware + software], the gestation period for these startups are longer as compared to pure play software startups and they need a substantial funding [typically 2 to 3cr per startup] to take their product to market. The risk appetite from VCs for investing in deep science startups is low. We typically support the startups by helping put a syndicate out or by passing on funds generated through CSR efforts. Companies in the past have contributed to this initiative through their CSR grant. For companies, this provides a mechanism to get an early insight into innovative startups- they can encourage their employees to mentor founders, help them with in areas such as Product Development, Sales, Marketing etc.
