Sierra Leone - Quality Improvement for Basic Education, Technical and Vocational Training Project (Education II)

The Quality Improvement for Basic Education, Technical and Vocational Training Project (Education II) is designed as part of the Government of Sierra Leone's National Development Plan (NDP) (1974/75-1978/79). It aims to help strengthen the education system and ensure its internal and external effectiveness. This project contributes to the strengthening of resources or institutional infrastructure that was already available and stimulates investments in the sector. The project should procure and provide furniture and equipment for CEP, rural primary schools, Rural Animation Centres, Educational Resource Centres, Bunumbu Teachers' College, District Inspectorates and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECAS). Concerning civil engineering works, the project should build Rural Animation Centres, Pedagogical Resource Centres in regional teacher training colleges and at the Milton Magai Higher Teacher Training College, as well as work at the CEP offices of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. It comprises five components, namely: i) Strengthening of basic education and practical skill development in rural schools; ii) Revitalizing teaching of science, vocational and technical subject; iii) Reinforcement of pre- and in-service teacher training; iv) Improvement of the management and supervision of education system; and v) Establishment of a Project implementation unit within the Ministry of Education, Cultural affairs and Sports (MECAS).
