Description
Description | The Simandou project in Guinea is a $23 billion mining venture focused on extracting high-grade iron ore from the Simandou mountain range. It includes the construction of a 600-kilometer railway linking the mountain deposits to a new deep-water port on the Atlantic coast, along with associated infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power generation facilities. The project is led by Chinese state-owned enterprises controlling 75% of the venture, with Rio Tinto holding a 25% stake. The railway construction is managed by China Railway Construction Corporation. The port facility at Morebaya is designed to handle very large ore carriers and will be one of West Africa's largest bulk commodity ports. The project aims to produce 60 million tonnes annually initially, scaling up to 95-100 million tonnes, significantly impacting global iron ore markets. |
