Six Nations Master Drainage and Flood Remediation Plan (MDFRP)
Sector: Water Supply and Storage • Location: Ontario, Canada
Source: Infrastructure Canada
River and water system protection by First Nations address not only traditional value concerns about the environment, but also the local impacts of flooding. In some cases, changes to the river system upstream and downstream of Reserve Lands (without First Nation engagement) are the main reasons for these problems on the Reserve. Six Nations of the Grand River has therefore partnered with Stragis

Description
Description | River and water system protection by First Nations address not only traditional value concerns about the environment, but also the local impacts of flooding. In some cases, changes to the river system upstream and downstream of Reserve Lands (without First Nation engagement) are the main reasons for these problems on the Reserve. Six Nations of the Grand River has therefore partnered with Stragis Environmental Services Inc./the Greenland Group to prepare a Master Drainage and Flood Remediation Plan (MDFRP). This project will help find methods of reducing or eliminating current flooding problems within the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Protection measures will also be found for areas where flood level reductions are not feasible in project future development areas. The work officially began on March 23, 2015 with completion scheduled for December 2015. The proposed work program is tailored to an environmental protection approach. This process ensures that Six Nations traditional, social, economic and natural environment factors are considered in the planning and design of new infrastructure (including flood control) or improving existing facilities. Deliverables for this project include: Flood Impact Strategy - describe what areas are most likely to flood and decide which culverts and streams need to be improved to reduce flooding. Training and hiring of local Six Nation community members to assist with collecting drainage information. Development of a Business Case to generate funding for improvements that needs to be made to the drainage system and reduce or eliminate flooding. On completion of the planning tasks and the identification of the recommended preferred Floodplain Management Plan for Six Nations the specific priority projects from the Plan will be designed and implemented including construction and associated monitoring. |
