Description
Description | The Sleemanabad water tunnel in Madhya Pradesh, touted as India's longest, is close to completion. It will transport Narmada river water through the Vindhya range to the Son river basin using gravity, enhancing irrigation and water management in the region. The tunnel passes beneath populated areas, railway tracks, and a national highway, cutting through marble, limestone, and dolomite layers. The project faced engineering challenges including unstable soil and water seepage. Initially started with an American tunnel-boring machine, a German Herrenknecht machine was later used due to geological conditions. The project was awarded in 2008 and is nearing completion with 96.66% work done. |
