Small Modular Nuclear Reactor at Joshua Falls Substation

Appalachian Power plans to build a small modular nuclear reactor at its Joshua Falls Substation on Mount Athos Road in Campbell County, Virginia. The project involves creating a new zoning district called industrial intensive to allow the reactor to be built by-right on properties with this zoning. The reactor is smaller than traditional nuclear power plants and can generate enough energy to power up to 500,000 homes. The project is expected to create hundreds of construction and full-time jobs. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission would oversee safety and waste management. The project is anticipated to be operational by the mid-2030s.
