The project involves the deployment of the United Kingdom’s first fleet of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), led by Rolls-Royce SMR in partnership with Great British Energy – Nuclear. This agreement marks the transition from planning to early delivery phases, enabling detailed work on reactor design, regulatory approvals, and supply chain development. The initial focus is on constructing three SMR units at Wylfa, a site with a history of nuclear power generation.The project includes comprehensive preparatory activities such as site-specific engineering, environmental assessments, and engagement with the UK’s nuclear regulators. It also covers the procurement of long-lead components and the establishment of manufacturing capabilities needed to produce modular reactor parts in factories. This modular approach is intended to streamline construction, reduce costs, and allow for faster deployment compared to traditional large-scale nuclear plants.
