Description

Description

Core problem Burkina Faso is faced with a threefold problem in securing its food supply in the long term: increasing demand for food due to the still high population growth, a shrinking availability of agricultural land due to progressive soil degradation and a resulting high dependence on imported food, while at the same time expecting long-term rising and volatile world market prices for staple foods. This gives rise to concrete needs for action in the agricultural sector, which must be addressed by both government and private actors through appropriate investments in infrastructure and training. Module objective The population in the area around the floodplains and irrigation perimeters has income opportunities in agricultural production, processing and marketing and greater food security. Key outputs The planning and implementation of irrigation measures in the floodplains and the realization of infrastructure to improve market connections for the villages involved are to be financed. In addition, the farmers are supported and advised on the use and maintenance of irrigation systems, on the marketing of their production and on the use of simple financing instruments. Target group The rural population in the area of the floodplains in the Sud-Ouest region and the province of Sissili. Producers and processors benefit directly, more than half of whom are women. Rice and vegetable traders, rice mill operators and people who process the harvested rice into parboiled rice also benefit indirectly by increasing the locally available supply. Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 1. End poverty in all forms and everywhere for good 2. End hunger and create food security
