Core problem The undersupply of the population of Mali with hygienically safe drinking water and the inadequate availability of sanitary facilities are key obstacles to development in the Malian state. The provision of water and sanitation in rural and small-town areas has declined in recent years. The reasons for this are a lack of capacity and a lack of interaction between the decentralized structures, pronounced regional supply deficits, strong population growth combined with crisis-related internal migration and an interim investment freeze, also caused by the crisis. Module objective The project aims to improve access to hygienically safe drinking water and adequate sanitation for the poor, rural and small-town population in Mali. The objective is to ensure a sustainable year-round supply of hygienically safe water and adequate sanitation for the population living in small and medium-sized towns in the program region. The objective is to achieve a national water supply rate of 82% by 2015 and to enable global access to water supplies in Mali by 2025. Main outputs The project includes a drilling program, the construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems, the installation of basic sanitation solutions as well as accompanying measures, information and awareness-raising measures. Target group The target group is the population of small and medium-sized towns with a population of between 2,000 and 30,000, particularly in the Malian regions of Kayes and Koulikoro.
