Description

Description

Comprised of two key on-board bus technology components: advanced fare technology and real-time technology. New Advanced Fare Technology, enabling mobile fare payments, will be installed on buses in up to 29 communities operating conventional transit service (approximately 790 buses). This will replace traditional fare media (magnetic swipe cards) with on-board NFC fare validators and an account-based system that will allow both closed loop and future open loop payment options for customers. Some rehabilitation of existing electronic fareboxes may be necessary during the rollout of this project to ensure continuity of fare collection given existing fareboxes are past useful life and deteriorating. Real-Time Technology will be expanded and installed on buses in up to 22 communities operating conventional transit service (approximately 270 buses). This customer-facing technology will provide for a passenger-accessible internet portal, which will enable commuters to use web browsers and mobile devices to see the exact location of their bus along its route. It will also provide for on-bus automatic voice announcements and interior passenger information displays, as well as the potential for wayside passenger information displays at key locations within the transit system. Both projects will provide significantly enhanced customer satisfaction; enable advanced data collection systems for better planning, scheduling, and fare revenue strategies; and improve operational awareness and effectiveness.
