The classic energy model is on the decline due to increasing decentralised energy generation, blackout risks and climate demands. Flanders and the Netherlands are endeavouring to rectify the energy problem: Energieakkoord (NL) and Energiepact (VL) are going all out in producing a new energy model focusing on renewable energy production and energy savings. Smart Energy Link, or SEL for short, will be able to manage energy flows thanks to the development of a local smart grid at various locations. Nine industrial estates, including ISVAG (Terbekehof, VL) and the Oss Wind Farm (NL), and one shopping centre, Dauwendaele in Middelburg (NL), are involved. For these locations, the aim is a reduction of 10% in energy consumption, 28% renewable energy and 5% efficiency gain for the remaining energy requirement, by the year 2020. Throughout the duration of the project, companies can call on Interreg support through SEL to achieve energy exchanges with other companies. To maximise mutual learning, the uniform mythology is being developed and use is being made of a cross-border E team (energy team). Twelve workshops are being organised so that all the partners, including the companies, municipalities and grid operators involved, can coordinate project.
