The overall FurnituRe project aims at giving the furniture-manufacturing industry new input in the direction of recycling. With reduced energy and resource consumption, remanufactured goods are produced at a fraction of the original cost and with lower polluting emissions. The project simultaneously addresses a regional lack of skilled workforce, the craft’s low attractiveness for young people and the low level of innovation in enterprises, which are relevant problems for most of the countries in the Danube Region. Within the framework of the START project, the partnership for the overall project was established, cluster cooperation in the furniture sector was strengthened by organising networking events, and funding opportunities for the overall project were located. By producing an extensive research study, the status quo of the environmental aspects of the furniture sector and furniture remanufacturing was defined as a key instrument for environmental sustainability and business growth. A project proposal was elaborated for the Danube Transnation Programmes’ first call in which all findings of the START activities were included.
