Smith-Carney New Oil Pipeline Project

A new export oil pipeline project from Alberta to the West Coast of British Columbia, proposed under an energy and climate deal between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. The project includes special exemptions from federal environmental laws and political support, with consideration of five potential ports in British Columbia. The project also involves agreements on impact assessments, methane equivalency, carbon pricing equivalency, and a trilateral MOU with the Pathways companies for carbon capture. The Pathways project aims to capture emissions from oilsands facilities and store them underground, with phased construction planned between 2027 and 2040. No private company has yet shown interest in purchasing or building the pipeline, but there is expected interest from foreign companies and sovereign wealth funds.
