In March of 1997, Societe Malgache de Mobiles (later SMM Orange) was awarded a GSM mobile license for Madagascar. The company launched its commercial GSM services under the name of Antaris in March 1998, ending a four year monopoly of Telecel on mobile services. The principal shareholders of the company were initially Telsea Investments (65.9%) and Maruitius Telecom (33%). France Telecom held 51% of Telsea through Orange. The company changed its name brand to Orange in June of 2003 to reflect the ownership of France Telecom. As of mid 2005, Orange Madagascar’s market leading network covered 98% of the urban population in 14 major towns and provided mobile services to about 214,000 active subscribers.
