It is the general objective of this action to support policy-making by making use of spatial information combined with social, economic and environmental statistics. The project gradually improves the provision of comparable data on cities and functional urban areas all over Europe and sets the foundation for a quantitative knowledge base for urban and regional policy on all levels of government. The statistics produced in the process of this work will become an integral part of the European Statistical System data resource. The action specifically aims at following points: 1) Provide high quality statistics on sub-national level including metadata. 2) Increase comparability of results by harmonising the national and EU level definitions. 3) Improve the methodology used based on feedback collected from stakeholders of the project as German cities, statistical institutes, and urban development organizations. 4) Test novel methods and new data sources to enable the production of statistics on sub-national territorial typologies. 5) Improve the national statistical production system to better integrate and manage information on territorial typologies and Local Administrative Units. 6) Raise awareness and increase knowledge about sub-national statistics. Data and metadata provision is the central task. Moreover, pilot studies on the use of new data sources or novel methods to produce sub-national statistics will be conducted and related methodological issues will be examined to improve the quality and availability of data for the production of sub-national statistics on city level. This can also improve coverage, validity and consistency of the data. To reduce the effort necessary for the usage of new data sources, the usability of new technical methods will be assessed where necessary. By further improving the web based platform for LAU management, the tracking of changes in the territorial classification of Germany will be facilitated.
