Snake Creek Diversion Project

A proposed flood mitigation project in Salem, South Dakota, aiming to address flooding caused by Snake Creek overtopping its banks, particularly near Richard Avenue and Highway 81. The project involves constructing a new open channel diversion upstream of Richard Avenue to capture floodwater early and reroute it westward, avoiding developed areas and preventing flooding along Highway 81. The design includes more than 4,000 feet of new channel with two crossings under Highway 81, connecting to the existing Snake Creek bypass near Washington Avenue. The project is in early design stages with funding applications submitted to FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and Flood Mitigation Assistance program.
