Description | The Soan Dam project is planned on the Soan River in the Potohar region near Dhok Pathan, Pakistan. It aims to store between 38 and 48 million acre-feet of water, which is eight to ten times the capacity of Tarbela Dam, and generate over 5,000 MW of electricity. The project includes drawing water via a 100 km canal from upstream of Tarbela to alleviate water shortages in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and surrounding areas, reduce flood risks by capturing excess monsoon flows, and support sediment management to protect downstream barrages and sustain agricultural flows to the Indus Delta. It also aims to revive groundwater and enhance irrigation networks, promoting regional food security and rural livelihoods. |
