The renewal grant GlobalEU-Florida continues its global focus with a transatlantic perspective that responds to societal cohesion issues of concerns on both sides of the Atlantic. It will predominantly focus on academic exploration and public outreach on topics of societal inclusion of social and ethnic minorities, migration, asylum and race issues, and a transnational approach towards Eurocentric foreign policy perspectives. These themes were chosen to address topical policy issues that have received increasing attention in the EU, the US and elsewhere, and thereby to provide for greater scholarly, political and societal visibility and outreach. Issues of social inclusion, migration & race and a critical reevaluation of European foreign policy approaches have high political salience and are topics that still need to be addressed more comprehensively, as they are essential for domestic societal sustainability and international public diplomacy. Working on these EU priority topics, our Miami Florida-Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (MF-JMCE) will continue to serve as a longstanding knowledge hub of expertise on EU topics in Miami, South Florida and beyond. Our Center will host annual conferences and roundtables to sustain a solid network of EU scholars, provide financial assistance to faculty and graduate students pursing research on the EU, train high school teachers on EU affairs, enable high school and university students to participate in Model EUs and other EU-related simulations; celebrate Europe-Day with our present EU consuls, and serve as local co-host for the EU Studies Association conference(s). Florida International University is one of the nation’s largest public research universities, has a diverse student body, and we served in the past as South Florida university consortium leader on EU affairs. The proposed activities will engage a wide variety of stakeholders with proven evaluation and dissemination plans in place.
