Description
Description | The Government of Algeria (through ONA, the National Wastewater Authority and AdE, the Algerian Water Authority) awarded a five year management contract to Suez Environnement (Suez) in November 2005, to manage the water and wastewater services for the capital city of Algiers. Under the contract, AdE and ONA created a new company SEAAL – Societe des Eaux d’Assainissement d’Alger, to take over the provision of potable water and wastewater services to Algiers’ 3.5 million population. The management control of SEAAL was to rest with Suez. The management contract was the result of an operational diagnosis carried out in 2002 by Suez at the request of the Algerian authorities (ONA and ADE) to define a long term sustainable solution to the water distribution problems in Algiers. The priority of the contract was to upgrade and modernize the Algiers water and wastewater system to make them more reliable over the long term. The contract also included an extensive training program for the 3000 employees of SEAAL to mobilize and transfer Suez's expertise and know-how. Suez committed to 24 hours (per day) water supply within the first three and a half years of operation. The entire investment for the upgrade and modernization of Algiers water and wastewater system was to be financed by the Algerian government under an investment program of Euro 200 million per annum. The management contract was expected to become operational in March 2006. In 2011, the contract was renewed for another period of 5 years. See new project ID#5930. 525,000 connections - 90% of the Algeria's population in urban areas are connected to the WS network. Algiers' population is about 3.5 million so 90% of these are connected. Divide it by approx 6 persons per household. Project renewed - see ID # 5930. |
