Description | Bulgarian-Russian gas company Overgas Inc., 50% owned by Russian Gazprom, won a 10-year licence for gas supplies to Bulgaria’s capital Sofia in July 2003 through its subsidiary Sofiagas. Sofiagas planned to invest over 49 million euro (US$60 million) in the gasification of Sofia by 2013. Sofiagas planned to install 175 km of pipes in the city of some 1.2 million people in 2004. The gasification was going to start with areas of Sofia that did not have alternative sources of heating. In September 2006, the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) granted Sofiagas a new license with a term of 35 years. As of December 2008, Sofigas had 10,300 residential and nearly 500 commercial customers. Overgas was established in 1991.
