Description
Description | The Kosovo energy sector is characterized by high greenhouse gas emissions, which result from the increasing energy demand and the inefficient use of mostly outdated and fossil generation capacities. The diversification of energy sources is low in Kosovo. Electricity generation is mainly based on coal-fired power (94%), which is generated in the two outdated power plants Kosovo A and B. The energy sector causes around 75% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Kosovo. Kosovo's national energy strategy 2022-2031 envisages the decarbonization of the energy sector by 2050. This includes the construction of new wind and solar capacities and thus covering 35% of electricity demand with renewable energies by 2031. The project includes the construction of a photovoltaic system with an installed capacity of 100 MW. The module goal is a significant reduction in greenhouse gases in the energy sector through the expansion of renewable energies. The project sponsor is the state-owned energy producer Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK). The target group of the project is all residents in Kosovo who are connected to the electricity supply network. |
