Solar One Environmental Education Center

The Solar One Environmental Education Center is a two-storey timber-clad building designed to harvest solar energy and store it in case of emergency in Stuyvesant Cove Park. It is the city's first building to include ground-up solar photovoltaics and battery storage as part of the plan. The building features classrooms elevated above the floodplain with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the river and a grating at ground level to allow water flow during floods. It replaces a previous building that served as a refuge during Hurricane Sandy and is part of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project to provide public space and flood protection along the East River in Manhattan.
