Solid waste management and circular economy

ContextThe Algerian Government attaches great importance to the issue of municipal waste management, a source of considerable dissatisfaction within the population. At the same time, the waste and recycling industry is seen as offering considerable opportunities to create ‘green’ jobs. Municipalities do, however, often lack the efficient structures and procedures required to effectively ensure that waste is collected and transported, streets are cleaned and citizens are aware of waste management issues. Regional and national administrative bodies and operating companies lack the skills and capabilities needed in terms of staff, institutions and administration to be able to implement an integrated waste management system that creates employment.ObjectiveSkills and capabilities in terms of staff, institutions and administration are improved in local, regional and national administrative bodies and operating companies so that they can implement an integrated waste management system that creates employment.ApproachOne of the project’s aims is to improve municipal collection and transportation of domestic refuse and make the population more aware of the related aspects of waste management. Waste management sites are to sort and dispose of waste more efficiently, and more waste is to be recycled. A further aim is to improve training, continuing professional development and the sharing of lessons learned in waste management.This approach sets out to achieve the following results:• Administrative skills will be improved in three municipalities to ensure effective waste management services.• An efficiently operated waste management site – landfill with a sorting facility – will serve as a reference model when training is carried out for people involved in waste management in other regions.• National and local institutions will promote employment-intensive recycling activities in cooperation with the private sector.• Specialists will learn all about innovative waste management approaches and experiences to date.Further information• Algerian Ministry of the Environmenthttp://www.mate.gov.dz/index.php• National Agency for Waste Managementhttps://and.dz/
