In October 2012, Infraestructura Energetica Nova (IEnova), a subsidiary of the American company Sempra Generation, was awarded the right to build and operate a natural gas pipeline in the states of Sonora and Sinaloa (Sasabe - Guayamas and Guayamas - El Oro). The pipeline named Gasoducto Sonora was set to have 833 km in extension. The bidding criteria and the names of the other participant companies were not available. In October and November 2012, two 25-year contracts were signed with the special purpose company established to manage the project Gasoductos de Agua Prieta, one for each segment. The total investment in the project was estimated at US$ 1000 million. In June 2014, 95% of the construction works on the 505-km Sasabe-Guayamas segment was completed (construction works had commenced in September 2013). This first segment was expected to be completed by August 2015 with a capacity of 770 MMPCD. The 328-km Guayamas - El Oro segment was expected to be operational by 2016 with a capacity of 510 MMPCD.
