Description | The SOS Children’s Village Tadjourah is a children’s village in Tadjourah, Djibouti, designed by Urko Sanchez Architects for SOS Children’s Villages International. It uses traditional climate-responsive design principles such as narrow shaded streets, wind-catching towers, reflective surfaces, vegetation, and planned airflow to stay cool without conventional air conditioning. The village integrates passive cooling methods, thermal mass, shade, airflow, and reflective materials to maintain stable indoor temperatures in an extremely hot desert climate. It was completed in 2014 and designed as a pedestrian-first, car-free environment focused on safety, social interaction, and climate responsiveness. |
