The Sosa-Wonsi railway to cut travel time between Bucheon and Ansan to 24 min.The Sosa-Wonsi double track railway linking the southwest area of Gyeonggi-do opened in 2019. The 23.4-kilometer railway connects the Sosa Station in Bucheon-si and the Wonsi Station in Ansan-si.The opening of the Sosa-Wonsi double track railway reduces the travel time between Sosa-dong in Bucheon and Wonsi-dong in Ansan from one and a half hours by car to about 24 minutes by subway. In particular, the new railway will play a great role in easing traffic congestion in the area around Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do, in which no subway infrastructure has been developed.The Sosa-Wonsi double track railway is being constructed as a BTL (build-transferlease) project. Hyundai E&C participated in a consortium by joining hands with 11 construction companies including Daewoo E&C and one investment trust company, and began the construction in April 2011.The Sosa-Wonsi double track railway project is divided into four sections. Among them, Hyundai E&C is in charge of sections 1 and 2. The construction of section 1 valued at about 374.2 billion won is designed to build the 6.580-kilometer railway, four stations including one transfer station and tunnels. The section 2 project worth about 326.6 billion won aims to construct the 7.372-kilometer railway, two stations, two tunnels and a cut and cover tunnel.The most challenging in the construction of sections 1 & 2 was the Sosa Transfer Station. The construction was conducted in the underground of the Sosa Station on the Seoul Subway Line 1 and the Sosa Bridge, a railway bridge. Special attention had to be paid because possible impacts of excavation works on the existing operation of the subway may lead to major accidents. Taking safety into account, the construction site adopted the divided shield method to cause the least change in the surrounding ground, rather than the generally used open-cut method.In addition, the construction site is responsible for performing complex construction works involving roadbeds, rail tracks, building, electricity and machinery. To deal with this, the construction site has made great efforts to prevent unexpected delays in the construction schedule by conducting rigorous procedure inspections.Hyundai E&C put a top priority on safety as most of the construction area passes through the old downtown including Bucheon and Siheung. To prevent a small mistake from causing a major accident, the construction site has provided the PTW (permit to work) system and safety training programs for workers on a constant basis. As a result, there have been no major accidents since the beginning of the construction.
