Description | South Africa plans to establish up to three large-scale battery gigafactories focusing on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. These factories, with capacities of 5 to 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh), aim to meet the growing demand for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Southern Africa, expected to reach around 55 GWh by 2034. The initiative is supported by government policies including a 150% tax deduction on capital expenses for battery manufacturing investments starting in 2026, and an allocation of around $53 million to support local manufacturing and assembly. Special Economic Zones such as Coega in Gqeberha and the Tshwane Automotive SEZ have been identified as ideal locations for these factories due to their infrastructure and tax benefits. |
