Description

Description

South Africa is facing a critical challenge with its national grid lacking the capacity to connect 72 GW of renewable energy projects currently in advanced stages of development, and a 220 GW pipeline of renewable energy projects. The ageing grid infrastructure, built primarily in the mid-to-late 20th century, is no longer fit for purpose due to decades of underfunding and lack of upgrades. The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) has committed to adding approximately 14,450 km of new transmission lines and 210 transformers by 2034 to connect 56 GW of new generation power. The Independent Transmission Programme (ITP) enables private players to finance, design, build, and operate transmission infrastructure, with a pilot phase targeting over 1,100 km of new lines to unlock more than 3 GW of grid capacity. The project aims to accelerate grid expansion, deploy Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and reform market mechanisms to ensure energy security and economic competitiveness.
