South Africa's First Wastewater-to-Green-Methanol Plant

Development of a first-of-its-kind green methanol production facility in Gauteng, South Africa, processing approximately 90,000 tonnes of municipal sewage sludge per year from the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Works. The facility will use renewable energy including 50 MW of solar power and additional wind power to produce green hydrogen via a 10 MW electrolyser, enabling production of approximately 14,300 tonnes of green methanol annually. The project aims to create a circular waste-to-fuel solution, avoid approximately 118,950 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per year, create up to 300 construction jobs and 60 permanent operational roles, and return industrial-grade water to the local utility.
