Description

Description

South Carolina has been studying wind energy potential for almost two decades, including mapping, feasibility studies, and testing at various heights. The state hosts one of the most advanced wind turbine testing facilities in the world, opened in 2013 at Clemson University, funded by $45 million from the U.S. Department of Energy and $53 million from state and private donations. Small-scale turbines have been installed in North Myrtle Beach to raise public awareness. Offshore wind development has been hindered by federal moratoriums and political changes, delaying production for likely another 15 years. The state is considering pivoting to onshore wind farms, which could be economically competitive and benefit rural communities.
