South Dakota Prison Construction Project

Under Review

The South Dakota Project Prison Reset Task Force is reviewing potential sites for new correctional facilities to replace the outdated South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. The project involves selecting a suitable location for a new prison, with previous plans for a 1,500-bed, multi-security men’s prison in Lincoln County stalled. The task force is considering multiple sites including rural Lincoln County, Worthing exit on Interstate 29, and other locations across the state. City and development leaders in Sioux Falls oppose prison sites near the former Citibank campus and Foundation Park due to concerns about growth, investment, and public perception.
