Description | South Dakota is generating roughly twice as much electricity as it consumes, primarily from wind energy. The state has 3,460 MW of installed wind capacity across 25 active wind farms, with 10 additional wind projects in development totaling 2,189 MW and a 333 MW project approved in February 2026 that will be the largest upon completion. However, transmission infrastructure constraints limit the ability to export this clean power, causing curtailment and economic challenges. Transmission upgrades are planned as a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar undertaking to unlock the state's full generation potential. |
