Description | Three large-scale tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the Torrens to Darlington upgrade of the South Road project have been named after leading South Australian suffragists. The first TBM named 'Mary' is commissioned and ready to begin tunneling a 4.5-kilometre tunnel from Clovelly Park towards Anzac Highway. The other two TBMs, 'Catherine' and 'Elizabeth', are expected to be operational by the end of 2026. These TBMs will be used to construct twin 4.5 km Southern Tunnels and twin 2.2 km Northern Tunnels as part of the North-South Corridor, with tunneling expected to take up to 24 months. |
