Description | The South32 Hermosa project is a multi-mineral mining operation located in Arizona's Patagonia Mountains. It is capable of producing up to five federally designated critical minerals from a single operational footprint. The project includes infrastructure such as a primary access road, a secondary dry-stack tailings facility, and a 138 kV power transmission corridor crossing Coronado National Forest land. The project has secured federal environmental approval through the US Forest Service's Final Record of Decision in July 2026, following the National Environmental Policy Act review process. Construction on private land was already approximately 50% complete at the time of federal approval. The project is notable for its inclusion in the FAST-41 permitting framework, its extensive environmental mitigation commitments, and its potential to reduce US import dependency on critical minerals. |
