Description | Amtrak has started construction on a new train maintenance facility at Southampton Yard in Boston. The project includes an 860ft long building covering over 60,000ft² with a two-bay maintenance and inspection facility, renovation of an existing two-track service and inspection facility, and infrastructure upgrades such as new direct fixation track, replacement of catenary power structures, installation of storage tracks, new retaining walls, utility relocations, and an expanded yardmaster's operations area. The facility will support routine inspections, servicing, and cleaning of trains on major routes including the Northeast Regional and Amtrak Downeaster, and accommodate Acela and Long Distance trains. |
