Description
Description | JSC South Telecommunication Company (UTK) was partially privatized in 1993 by the Russian government, through the national voucher program. The government maintained operational control over the company, holding 51% of voting shares and 38.5% of common shares. South telecom provided fixed local telephone services through its own network in the South Federal District and used Rostelecom's infrastructure to provide national and international services. South telecom also provided Internet, IP telephony, data transmission, wave and cable television services. South telecom served an area with a population of 18.6 million people. The current South telecom was created on June 28 2001, and intended to be one of seven mega-regional companies in which Svyazinvest, the state-controlled holding company, consolidated its 74 regional fixed line operators. The consolidation took place in November 2002 by merging 10 regional telecommunications operators from South Russia into existing Kuban Elektrosvyaz, headquartered in Krasnodar. The 10 regional operators which became branches of South telecom were: Kuban Elektrosvyaz, Adygeya Elektrosvyaz, Kabbalktelecom, Volgograd Elektrosvyaz, Stavropol Elektrosvyaz, North Osetia Elektrosvyaz, Rostov Elektrosvyaz, Astrakhan Svyazinform, Karachaevo-Cherkessia Elektrosvyaz and Kalmykia Elektrosvyaz. At the end of 2004 Svyazinvest controlled South telecom through 51% of voting shares, and a 18.5% stake of the company’s common shares. Foreign investors owned 35.14% of South telecom and employees had the remaining 16.12%. http://eng.svyazinvest.ru/ http://www.stcompany.ru % private = 62.5 private + 9% (25% of 38.5% Svyazinvest) Check 2004 figures, annual report not yet out.
