Description

Description

A proposal to install solar canopies in the parking lot at Southington High School was presented by TitanGen, a Connecticut-based energy consulting firm. The project aimed to add carport-style solar canopies to the largest parking lot in town, which currently has no such structures. The district already has numerous solar panels on school rooftops, with additional panels planned for installation on the high school's roof in the summer. The solar canopies were projected to save about $200,000 per year, but concerns about safety, visibility, potential damage, snow sliding off the canopies, and additional maintenance costs were raised. The proposal to enter into a power purchase agreement for the solar arrays was rejected by the Board of Education in a 6-3 vote.
