Description | Spacetel Guinee Sarl was awarded an AMPS license to provide cellular phone services in Guinea in 1993. The company was a subsidiary of Investcom Holding, a Luxembourg-based company which was partly owned by the Lebanese Mikati Group in partnership with Syrian investors that had mobile operations in Africa and the Middle East. Spacetel Guinee Sarl started its commercial operations in September 1997. The company had focused on the high end of the market. As of end 2004, Spacetel had 17,516 subscribers. Sotelgui, the former state-owned telecoms monopoly which was 60% owned by Telekom Malaysia, was by far the biggest mobile operator. In July 2006, Investcom Holding was acquired by MTN. Thus, the two Guinean subsidiaries, Spacetel and Aareba merged. In 2007, Spacetel licence was acquired by Orange, through its Senegal subsidiary Sonatel. None None |
