Description

Description

SMarAI is an innovative project oriented to improve the maritime safety intervention capabilities in case of disaster at sea, through the development of an operational platform based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to allocate operational resources more effectively, thus helping the decision-making process. The emergencies identified by the Spanish Maritime Safety and Rescue Agency as essentials for the organization and the accomplishment of its duties are mass rescue operations and incidents of marine pollution. SMarAI technical framework will consist of three key elements: 1) Data integration and analysis for training, testing and validating AI algorithms in the estimation of risk disaster. 2) Risk analysis including hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities, and definition of the suitable AI algorithms. 3) AI Operational Platform for end-users, integrated in a viewer where the AI models are applied to the selected data to achieve real-time risk forecasting and mapping. The proposed framework strengthens the technological capabilities of Member States (MS) to anticipate and withstand the effects of future major disasters at sea addressing the following EU Disaster Resilience Goals: anticipate, prepare, alert and secure. SMarAI includes disaster risk knowledge and methodology that can be replicated by MS and neighbouring countries, fostering innovation and technological development for disaster risk assessment. The achievement of these goals will contribute significantly to the greening of disaster risk management (DRM) activities and marine environmental protection, not only by a reduction in GHG emissions associated to an optimized allocation of the available operational resources, but also due to the rationalization in the use and acquisition of new ones. The project promotes the application of disruptive knowledge and tools, exploring new uses of existing technologies not yet applied to DRM representing an ambitious challenge to Civil Protection.
