Description

Description

The possibility to cross the Danube by a ferry existed between Lábatlan-Piszke and Karvaravany nad /Dunajom (Slovakia) for centuries. The maps from XVIII. century mark this point on the Danube. Piszke also got involved into the longitudinal transport of the Danube since 1863 onwards. Then the Gerenday family established a port at this place from where the products of their garden and the nearby excavated red marble were transported to Vienna and Buda. The steamer which moved between Buda and Vienna also stopped in the port twice a day. The port was mined and blown up in the World War II. In April of 2006 the two governments signed an agreement on the border crossing points designated for tourism along the Hungarian-Slovak border. Among them there was the one between Karvaravany nad / Dunajom and Piszke as well. Then the two municipalities made an attempt to reopen the port but the initiative failed because of the lack of the proper infrastructure and the supportive attitude of the authorities. In 2008 both local governments decided to rebuild the port in such a way that the development recouples the two settlements into the Danube transport.
